Description
SS-31 (also called Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide that selectively concentrates at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid uniquely found there. The peptide’s alternating aromatic-cationic motif (D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe) is what lets it cross cell membranes and accumulate in mitochondria without depending on the membrane potential most mito-targeted molecules require.
Why researchers reach for SS-31. Most mitochondrial studies watch the electron transport chain, ROS production, and ATP output. SS-31 shows up in that research because it stabilizes cardiolipin-cytochrome c interactions, which are central to how efficiently the ETC runs. When mitochondrial function is compromised (ischemia-reperfusion models, aging models, cardiolipin peroxidation) SS-31 is a common tool for asking “does propping up cardiolipin change the outcome?”
The nomenclature. SS-31 is the research-literature name (Stealth/Szeto-Schiller peptide 31). Elamipretide is the pharma-development name used in clinical-trial contexts. MTP-131 is a third name from Stealth BioTherapeutics. All three refer to the same peptide with the same D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe sequence.
