Description

B12 (Cyanocobalamin) is the cyanide-stabilized form of vitamin B12, the version that shows up in most B12 supplements and research literature. It’s the most stable form on the shelf, the most studied, and what cells convert into the active forms (methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin) once they’re inside the body.

Why people in the research community pay attention to B12. B12 sits at the center of two big pathways researchers care about: the methylation cycle (where it works with folate to recycle homocysteine into methionine) and the energy/Krebs side (where it helps convert methylmalonyl-CoA to succinyl-CoA). When researchers talk about “low B12,” they’re often watching markers like serum B12, homocysteine, and methylmalonic acid (MMA) in their study panels.

Cyano vs methyl: what’s the difference? Cyanocobalamin (this product) and methylcobalamin are the two forms you’ll see most often. Methyl- is the active form, sold as more “bioavailable.” Cyano- is the stable form, the one used in nearly every clinical study you’ll find on PubMed. Cells convert cyano to methyl on their own via the cyanocobalamin reductase pathway, so for research applications the cyano form is the reference standard. If you ever see hydroxocobalamin or adenosylcobalamin, those are the other two forms — less common, more specialized.
